Horowitz, an experienced scriptwriter also penned the film’s script. Stormbreaker was adapted into a film in 2006 starring Alex Pettyfer. There is plenty of action making this a popular choice for young male readers. MI6 head Alan Blunt who controls Alex’s inheritance blackmails him with threats of selling his uncle’s home, placing him in an orphanage and having his live in housekeeper Jack Starbright deported.Īlex is unaware that his uncle has been preparing him for the secret service with karate and outdoor pursuits such as rock climbing and river rafting.Īlex completes an extensive training program with SAS soldiers before being sent to Sayle Enterprises armed with a series of teen-friendly gadgets including acne cream that burns through metal and a Gameboy equipped with spy gear such as a bug detector, transmitter and smoke screen. Ian Rider’s last case was investigating multi-millionaire businessman Herod Sayles, who had recently announced that he was donating thousands of his new computer line Stormbreaker to London school children. Later Alex is invited to his uncle’s bank where he learns that Ian Rider was a secret agent for MI6. ![]() In the first of many action sequences Alex narrowly escapes after the car is loaded into the car crusher with Alex inside. The novel opens following the death of 14-year-old Alex Rider’s guardian and uncle Ian in a car accident.

Easiest thing in the world!Ī more subtle example is afforded by the bicycle. Once the log starts spinning, there usually is no recovery and you fall off. Unfortunately, as you take that step, by Newton's 3rd law, while pushing yourself the left, you also push the top of the log to the right and make it roll faster. A floating log's buoyancy easily supports the weight of a lumberjack standing on top of it, but keeping one's balance there (sometimes the subject of competition among lumberjacks) is a different matter altogether.Īs long as you stand right at the top, there is no problem, However, floating logs tend to roll: if the log rolls and shifts your footing towards (say) your right, the natural reaction is to take a small step to the left and return to the top of the log. Falling off a LogĪ common American expression is " as easy as falling off a log." Lumberjacks felling trees used to trim their branches and then float them on a river to the sawmill, separately or tied together (some still do). It is all in Newton's third law: as your legs propel your body towards the dock, they also apply to the boat an equal force in the opposite direction, which pushes it away from the dock. Otherwise, even as you jump, the boat "magically" moves away from the dock, possibly making you miss your leap or pushing the boat out of reach. Those familiar with small boats know that before jumping from a boat to the dock, it is wise to tie the boat to the dock first, and to grab a handhold on the dock before jumping. In a similar way, the forward motion of a rocket comes from the reaction of the fast jet of hot gas shooting out from its rear. Rotating garden sprinklers work by the same principle. The nozzle of a big firehose has handles which firefighters must grasp firmly, because as the jet of water shoots out of it, the hose itself is forcibly pushed back.By Newton's law, the gun itself recoils backwards. When a gun is fired, the force of the gas produced by burning gunpowder hurls out the bullet. In contrast, Newton's 3rd law always involves more than one object. Between the floors, as long as the elevator does not accelerate, the net force must be zero, hence the two forces must be equal and opposite ( v>0, a=0). It senses two forces: downwards, its weight and that of the people in it, and upwards the pull of the cable which holds it up. An elevator is pulled up from the street level to the 5th floor.Obviously, the floor is exerting on it an equal and opposite force -m g (velocity v=0, acceleration a=0). However, it does not move in that direction, because the floor stops it. A heavy object stands on the floor, pulled down by the Earth with a force m g (drawing). This is not an example of the third law, but of equilibrium between forces. Note the important provision: two objects must be involved! There exists a whole set of situations where two equal and opposite forces act on the same object, canceling each other so that no acceleration (or even no motion) occurs. Now I want to jump forward in time from this diagram, which depicts a theory of how the The Caesarean Text is a text of the Gospels. Sometimes, though, the Caesarean Text features a variant which is neither Alexandrian Western manuscripts and Alexandrian manuscripts, and picking and choosing between the Where there were both Western and Alexandrian manuscripts (like Caesarea) – comparing The Caesarean Text seems to have mostly been a result of copyists – in a place The "Alexandrian" approach was basically, "Make the text clear by refining it."īecause of the nice climate of Egypt, most ancient manuscripts which contain the Alexandrian The text, removing repetitions and words and phrases which the copyists considered The Alexandrian Text contained grammatical refinements and sometimes "pruned" Also, some "Western" manuscripts show signs of doctrinal tampering, although the question of exactly who was behind the tampering has not been entirely resolved. The Western Text omits some phrases, too some of these omissions are attributable to sloppy copying. The "Western" approach was basically, "Make the text clear by adding to it." The message, not the words themselves, seems to have been the main thing to the Western copyists. The Western Text contained many expansions, harmonizations, and paraphrases. Each text-type had its own characteristics, which wereĭetermined in part by the approach taken by copyists to the text. Influenced the contents of the copies, in at least three different ways.Īs copies were made and re-copied in the first three centuries of the church, at least threeĭifferent types of text arose. ![]() There were also different ideas - held byĭifferent people in different areas - about how the text should be treated. Just as there areĭifferences between British English and American English, there were differences between Greekĭialects, and adjustments were made accordingly. Copies of the autographs were hand-copied in different locations.īut not everyone treated the text the same way when they made copies. By "autograph" I refer to the first manuscript to contain the text in its original, definitive, published form. If I did, we would probably have to toss out John 21:24 and Romans 16:22 - since John 21:24 seems to be written by someone other than John, and Romans 16:22 obviously originated with Tertius, not Paul. The first step in doing this project is to determine the length cable you’ll need. The cable would run from one wall of the house, past the patio, to a tree and provide string light support out to the corner of the patio, where it could then turn 90-degrees and run back to a fixed eye-bolt at the other house wall. I would then attach the string lights to the suspension cable using plastic zip ties. ![]() I decided I would install 15-feet of string light on a fixed cable, and then return the lights back to the other wall of the house. This is useful information when designing light coverage. The Brightech Ambience Pro Commercial Grade Outdoor Light Strand that I purchased spaces out their light-bulbs 36” apart. In order to do this properly I needed a cable running from one wall of the house to a tree 60 plus feet away. I wanted to basically follow the outer perimeter of the patio with lights, which was approximately 45 feet. I’m my situation, I have two house walls with a patio in between. In order to create a freestanding solution for your string lights you first need to think about how you will hang the lights. I connected the string lights to this outlet with a 12-guage, weatherproof 10-foot extension cord.

This requires a robust management system, including processes to test and designate hazardous waste, record outcomes and respond to incidents. From a business perspective, hazardous waste must be managed efficiently and effectively to limit those risks and avoid legal and financial implications. Hazardous waste management systems have major environmental, health and safety ramifications. Waste that cannot be recycled, treated or destroyed is permanently stored or disposed of in secure landfills, or it may be injected deep underground into porous rock. Temporary storage includes ponds, lagoons or waste piles designed to prevent dispersion and seepage. Some storage is temporary, for waste awaiting treatment or another use. ![]() Treatment methods are diverse, and may include burning, chemical reprocessing, bacterial biodegradation or physical solidification, among other methods. Next, waste is often treated to reduce the quantity, prepare it for recycling and/or to lower toxicity levels. Transport is carefully monitored, and many countries require careful documentation every step of the way. The process typically begins with transport, when waste is sent to a separate facility or company for management. Remaining material must be carefully disposed of or stored. Ideally, businesses will reduce and recycle as much as possible. Waste management procedures are industry-specific, and regulations also depend on the quantity of waste produced. How Is Hazardous Waste Managed?īusinesses that generate hazardous waste are responsible for managing the final outcome of those materials, whether that’s recycling, storage, treatment or disposal. Corrosive - This type of waste eats away at other materials like metal.īeyond these common categories, hazardous waste may also be infectious, such as needles disposed of at hospitals, or radioactive, such as spent nuclear reactor fuel.Ignitable - This includes materials flammable at low temperatures. ![]() Reactive - This type of waste violently reacts with elements like air or water.Toxic - This includes poisons with immediate, long-term and/or chronic health effects. ![]() Hazardous waste is most commonly classified as: What Types of Hazardous Waste Exist?īusinesses are responsible for determining if their waste is hazardous. Hazardous waste management is a process to ensure the storage, treatment and disposal of dangerous waste is conducted in a manner that protects the health and safety of people and the environment. What Is Hazardous Waste Management?īoth companies needed better hazardous waste management systems. Environmental Protection Agency included an additional $55,000 investment in local emergency response equipment and enhanced training for thousands of employees. An electric vehicle company faced $31,000 in penalties for violations of air emissions standards and hazardous waste determination and management at a California facility. However, an incident like the tideflats fire one doesn’t have to occur for businesses to face fines. Later that year, another fire in the facility’s shredder led to additional fines and penalties. While no employees were harmed in the fire, inspectors found the company improperly managed cleanup and concerns were raised for populations living downwind of the fire. It can also lead to costly fines, litigation and shutdown of business operations, regardless of health and safety consequences.įor example, a waste management company in Tacoma, Washington, recently paid $2.2 million to settle with the state Department of Ecology over a 2018 fire on the local tideflats and subsequent compliance violations. It can contaminate surface water, groundwater and land. Failure to properly manage hazardous waste can have significant acute and long-term negative effects on human health and the environment.
